Speedos

tanned or banned?

SpeedosI've noticed that guys like myself who wear Speedos for swimming (when I can't swim nude) are in the minority. Frankly, I don't know how anyone can swim wearing those baggy shorts they call swimwear these days. My ex used to buy me the skimpiest membrane-thin speedo type suit she could find. We were definitely a match. She used to say she was different from other women in that she liked looking at men's bodies. How different was she? Come on gals - I wanna know - does a man in a snug Speedo look that bad?   —Andy C. Vileta

From Eric
Much of the swimwear available to men these days is nothing short of ridiculous.  Baggy, yards of fabric, extending down to the ankles.  Are you kidding me?

I usually opt for something a little more skimpier, something that clings to the skin.  Usually a square-cut suit, especially when swimming laps after a workout at the health club.  When I get the time to go to the beach or tan, I have a very skimpy posing suit-type suit I like to wear.  Extremely snug but extremely comfortable at the same time.  These suits highlight my ass, and also offer a very noticeable "bulge" in front, which I like.

I try to take pride in my appearance, and choosing to put myself on display by wearing these suits demands that I workout religiously and place great importance on body grooming.  I'm positive that some folks look at my swimwear choice with disdain, but I've never had anyone tell me directly.  Most of the feedback I have received directly has been rather positive. In truth, I think the majority of people don't even notice what other people wear at the pool or beach, so I wouldn't be discouraged from choosing to wear a rather revealing suit.  Most people probably don't care.

From Paul
I think its quite strange with the mostly negative reactions to Speedo's that seem to be in USA media and peoples (general) attitudes. I am pleased to see that many USA people enjoy them and why not. Women can wear something really skimpy and no one minds but a guy wear a speedo brief on a beach in USA and people think its odd. I am from the UK and have been wearing Speedos from around 10 years old, and all of my friends did as well. As for swimming and sports there is nothing better. Styles and attitudes change all the time, and that is fair enough. Most younger people seem to avoid them, and I think possibly this is a confidence issue, and a shame. As for them being sexy, I think the are, most definitely and cannot see a problem with that.

From Tim
I have been swimming this summer at a great outdoor pool. It is a public pool, but most of the serious swimmers wear speedos and so it is common to see plenty of men in speedos. Even some of the woman wearing female speedos look great with some of the cuts of the suits.

From Diveguy
As a totally straight, hetero male, let me say that nothing beats wearing a speedo while swimming, snorkeling or freediving.  So comfortable and natural feeling in the water, nearly feels like you're wearing nothing at all.  I was doing a lot of work in Hawaii in the early 1990s, and I always made sure to include a weekend for the beach on each trip.  I quickly developed a passion for snorkeling, but felt so uncomfortable wearing baggy swim trunks.  I always had a secret interest for brief swimsuits, so one trip I finally got up the nerve to go shop for a smaller bathing suit, the anonymity of being by myself in Hawaii making it a bit easier.

The stigma in this country for brief swimsuits for men is a damn shame.  I challenge any guy who is into water sports to give a speedo a try and not become an instant fan of them.  Once you go speedo, you'll never go back to trunks.  Plus, you'll get that super sexy speedo tan that your women will absolutely love.  All mine have.  I love, love love speedos.

From Debbi
In my teenage years I used to think the boys I saw in speedos were immodest and I didn't like to look at them. I was dating a boy on the high school swim team and so I would attend the swim meets. Seeing the bulge in those speedos made me feel uncomfortable. Twenty years later I realize how immature I was. This change was helped by my husband. He does a lot of swimming now and bought some speedos when he started. When I first saw him in one, I enjoyed seeing his bulge and then realized other woman could also. I was a little embarrassed for him, but he stated it didn't matter to him. It isn't like no one knows men have bulges, just like women have breasts which you can't really hide. It did make sense and after seeing him in his speedo for awhile, I really didn't notice.

From Adrian
Well, everyone is entitled to express their own opinion and thoughts.  My opinion is that people who ridicule swim briefs are just plain closed minded and immature.  To say they are "gross" is just gross to hear that!  Growing up in the 80's, swim briefs were acceptable.  I think swim briefs are less popular now due to the "hip-hop" and "baggy" fashion influence.

I think adequate swim briefs for men have their place and time.  I'm a 6'0, 31, athletic muscular straight male from Southern California and wear square-cut boxer shorts at pools and board shorts at the beach.  My GF loves how my square-cuts fit!  I feel more masculine, sexy, and attractive.  I think these type of swimwear looks better in people in good shape.

I also have a swim brief that I wear for "play" only in private with my GF.  She loves how they fit and she encourages me to wear them at the pool!  I don't think I would want to do that due to the "hostile speedophobia" society we live in!.  Swim briefs in other parts of the world are ok, but the USA is so up-tight for that.  It does not make sense!  Women can wear next to nothing, but men are not allowed to wear anything less than board shorts.  How ridiculous!  The USA has become a super macho hypocritical double standard society.  It's very sad.  No wonder why the rest of the world doesn't like us...go figure!

To stereotype swim briefs as homosexual is so stupid and ridiculous.  I say to men who have the body and feel good in swim briefs, go for it!  If women can nearly show their entire body nude in a tiny bikini, then men should be allowed to wear swim briefs!  Don't mind those immature people who don't like it.  If they don't like it, too bad!  Tell them to look or go somewhere else!  The USA is a free nation, so wear whatever you like as long as it's adequate. Swim Briefs Forever!!!

From Lisa
As a 44 year old woman, this topic is always interesting. Not even sure why this is a debate. When I was a teen, we looked at boys in their "Speedos", oh yes we sure did. That was in the early 80's mind you. Quite frankly a man should be allowed to wear what he wants as I do not care for double standards. If a large woman wears a bikini that is not too flattering she has to deal with it at some point. Who am I to judge, male or female, if they are less than perfect.

I keep myself in good shape and am an avid swimmer. At the pool I go to, any man not wearing a brief type swimsuit just does not seem like a swimmer. Modestly cut, say 3 inches on the side, give or take is just fine. Patterned likely better as there is not the "shadow" or "outline" happening, but a man in good shape with a masculine bulge is hardly disgusting or "gross".

At a beach or holiday resort, the most confident men are always the ones wearing small bikinis. That's right, I said confident (and would care if the "shadow" or "outline" is there, especially if they are wearing a solid lighter colored suit) I could care less if they are in less than perfect shape. As long as they are not posing or strutting, it looks quite natural and can assure you a lot of women would agree with me. We are looking and like that confidence. Hopefully more men start wearing skimpy swimwear. I for one would love to see them come back, remind me of when I was 16 and enjoyed the "eye candy"!

I wear Speedos or other bathing briefs (Tyr, Nike) to swim laps, as most of the guys at my Y do. Once you try them you'll be hooked. They are extremely comfortable, allow you great freedom of movement and that means you can go faster and get a better work out. For me, the biggest obstacle was appearing in public in a Speedo the first time. I am in good shape, but I don't have the classic swimmer's body. (For one thing, I've got a very hairy chest). But what I found is an attitude of nonchalance when it comes to men in Speedos at the lap pool. It's expected attire.

As for the bulge -- well, yeah, it's there. But with the exception of a Nike swim brief I recently retired -- a suit in which my penis for some reason looked embarrassingly huge -- I honestly don't find Speedos or swim briefs all that revealing. However I do not wear Speedos to a regular beach. For me, they seem out of place there. But that's just me.

From Daniel
I've been wearing bikini swimsuits exclusively for 10-12 years. I'm decently proportioned, not over-weight and just got completely fed up with wearing baggy shorts at the beach or pool.

Sometimes a bikini with 3 or 4 inch sides and a full seat is appropriate. Most often though I'll wear one with no more than 1/2 inch sides with a Rio style seat or even a partial thong back.

I shave completely to avoid the gross, hairy look. I definitely prefer the look and feel of a skimpy string bikini. The tan lines certainly are nicer than those with the dopey shorts. If there happens to be some prude on the beach who can't handle that...too bad.
